
River (Helen Pattinson) is a certified Yoga teacher and has been practising yoga for over 20 years. Her classes have shifted away from 'flow' style to a more subtle and slow mindful practice called 'Somatic Yoga.'
Somatic Yoga is a slow, meditative practice that draws inspiration from the work of Thomas Hanna and my ongoing mentorship with Elizabeth Claire Burr. Through slowing down, awareness arises. Patterns of tension held in the body are brought into the light of awareness so that they may be released. Elizabeth often says, "If we can feel it, we can heal it." So we return to our feeling, sensing animal bodies. Habitual actions over time can create involuntary trauma patterns in the body called sensory-motor amnesia. Through a series of simple movements we learn to recognise and release these patterns with sensory-motor awareness, bringing freedom, ease and liberation to the body-heart-mind.
